Shop Your Closet
A while ago, when my schedule was overwhelming, and I was constantly on the go, I used shopping to boost my endorphins and release stress. I would work, make money, and then, when I got paid, my whole paycheck would be gone in maybe one or two days. I could never understand where all the money went.
I definitely realized I had a problem. I was using shopping to release stress, get a dopamine high, and feel calm. It really did make me feel calm when I would go to the store. But now, as we transition into a different stage of life—where I’m going from being a working person to a stay-at-home mom, and my husband is planning to retire—we’re going to be on a budget. This year, I’m focused on saving and being intentional about slow, purposeful living.
So, I’ve decided that I’m not going to buy more than one or two outfits this year. Why? Because I’m going to be intentional about going through my closet all year and wearing what I already own. I have so many clothes with tags on them, and when I go through my closet, I think, “Wow, these are beautiful! Yes, they’re beautiful, and they’re my taste, but I haven’t taken the time to wear them.”
As I wake up today and reflect, I encourage you to think about how you can be intentional in your own life—finding joy not in external rewards or instant gratification, but in what you already have. Are there things you already own that bring you joy? Can you shop in your own closet if you used to have a shopping addiction? Can you find joy in morning routines, like opening the windows and letting the air in? Can you find joy in the music you listen to on Pandora?
What are the ways you can save this year, be intentional, and live a bit more present in your day-to-day life?
